なぜ、履修したか

私は現在、プライム上場の建設会社で、IR、広報、サステナビリティ関連の業務を担当しており、実務に生かすためアドバンスト・コーポレート・コミュニケーション（ACC）を履修しました。
現部署に2018年にリーダーとして任命されましたが、これまでとは畑違いの分野で知識も乏しく、未経験のメンバーと試行錯誤を続けていました。このままではダメだと強い危機感を感じ50代ながらMBA修得を決意しました。

アクション・ラーニングは、1年目の学びを踏まえ科目を選択します。専門性を深める、未経験領域の幅を広げる二つの方向がありますが、業務に直結する前者のACCを選択しました。
ACCは一言で言うと、企業が公正に評価・支持されるために必要な知識やコミュニケーションを学ぶ科目です。評価と言っても財務・非財務で幅広く、また企業に対する期待も変化しています。ACCはIRやコーポレートガバナンスに関する有数のコンサルティング会社ジェイ・ユーラス・アイアールの寄附講座であり、高い専門性と幅広い領域を網羅的に学べる点に魅力を感じました。

授業で学んだこと

先生方からファイナンス・企業価値評価やサステナビリティ経営に関するアカデミックな観点、多様なゲストスピーカーから実務の観点を学びます。ゲストは、ESG投資の責任者、サステナビリティ情報開示の専門家、有名企業の役員や社外取締役など豪華な顔ぶれで、最新トレンドや現場のリアルな話を聞くことで、進化が続くこれらの分野の理解が深まります。また、活発な質疑と志の高いABS生同士のやりとりは大きな刺激であり、新卒から約30年、一つの会社に勤務している私の固定概念や視野の狭さを毎回痛感する場でもありました。

そしてこれらを生かし、中間、最終のプレゼンを個人で行います。私はアクティビストの株主提案事例を最終発表テーマに選びました。普段、IRとして企業側ですが、対極のアクティビスト投資家の立場で考えたこと、また先生やABS生から発表に対するフィードバックを受けたことで、経営に対する視野が広がりました。

学んだ内容を今後どのように生かしていきたいか

多くが業務に直結しているため、今後実務に生かし、より高い視座、広い視野で自社の企業価値向上に貢献していきたいと思います。

最後にお伝えしたいのは、本科目は、決して業務に直結している人だけのものでない、ということです。
私以外のABS生12名は、直接業務とは関係ない立場でしたが、「知識ゼロから企業評価できるまで体系的に学べた」「投資家が企業をどのように評価するかを学べ、経営の理解が深まった」「自身の業務の意味を見出すきっかけとなった」「授業で株主と疑似的にコミュニケーションをした経験は今後の業務に有効」「非上場企業でも企業価値に関して学ぶことが必要であり、IRだけでなく経営に携わる方にこそお勧めしたい」との意見です。
ACCの学びは、上場企業やIR部門だけの専門的なものではなく、非上場企業やあらゆる職種に必須の知識であることは間違いありません。

“Comprehensively Learning the Knowledge Necessary for Companies to be Fairly Evaluated and Supported”

Why did I take this course?

I currently work for a Prime-listed construction company, handling IR, public relations, and sustainability-related tasks. I took ACC to apply the knowledge to my work. I was appointed as the leader of my current department in 2018, but it was an entirely different field for me, and I had little knowledge. I continued to struggle with my inexperienced team. Feeling a strong sense of crisis, I decided to pursue an MBA in my 50s. Action Learning allows you to select subjects based on your first year’s learning. There are two directions: deepening your expertise or broadening your experience in new areas. I chose the former, ACC, as it directly relates to my work.

In short, ACC is a subject where you learn the knowledge and communication skills necessary for companies to be fairly evaluated and supported. The evaluation covers a wide range of financial and non-financial aspects, and expectations for companies are also changing. The ACC course is offered by J-Eurus IR, a leading consulting firm in IR and corporate governance. I was attracted by the opportunity to comprehensively learn high-level expertise across a wide range of areas.

What I Learned in Class

I learned academic perspectives on finance, corporate value evaluation, and sustainability management from professors, and practical perspectives from various guest speakers. The speakers included heads of ESG investment, experts in sustainability information disclosure, executive officers, and outside directors from renowned companies. Hearing the latest trends and real-life stories from the field deepened my understanding of these ever-evolving areas. The active discussions and interactions with highly motivated ABS students were a significant stimulus. They often made me realize my narrow perspective after working for the same company for nearly 30 years.

Leveraging this, I conducted mid-term and final presentations individually. For my final presentation, I chose to focus on an activist's shareholder proposal example. Usually, I am on the corporate side in IR, but considering the perspective of activist investors and receiving feedback from professors and ABS students broadened my view on management.

How do you want to use what you learned in my work?

Since much of what I learned directly applies to my work, I plan to use it in practice to contribute to improving our corporate value with a higher perspective and broader vision.

Lastly, I want to emphasize that this course is not just for those whose work is directly related. Among the 12 ABS students besides myself, none were in positions directly related to their work, yet they shared the following opinions: “I learned how to evaluate companies systematically from zero knowledge,” “I gained insights into how investors evaluate companies, deepening my understanding of management,” “It provided a trigger to find meaning in my work,” “The experience of simulated communication with shareholders in class is useful for future work,” “Even for non-listed companies, learning about corporate value is necessary, and I recommend it to those involved in management, not just IR.” The knowledge gained from ACC is essential not only for listed companies and IR departments but also for non-listed companies and all professions.
